Lewis, Iowa

The Oakwood Cemetery on the east edge of Lewis is the final resting place of many prominent Lewis residents that aided freedom seekers during their lives.

The Griswold High School Communication Arts class, under the direction of Communication Arts teacher Brianna McCollum and Instructional Coach Sandy Nelson, have recently completed a 7 minute documentary that is linked below. This documentary was part of a year-long project & features stories of Lewis residents buried at the Lewis Oakwood Cemetery who played a role in the abolitionist movement in southwest Iowa.

This documentary was produced by students Pip Valdivia, Maddy Main, & McKenna Wiechman with help from local historian & Hitchcock House guide & board member Dana Kunze. Griswold student Mike Kunze assisted with locating headstones. Greenhills AEA staff members Judy Griffin & Jonathan Skarin assisted with drone footage. We appreciate all the time & talent that went into creating this video by the high school class. May 2022.
